Who we are

Since its founding in 1721, the First Congregational Church of Wellfleet has been an integral part of the town. We have kept alive our church’s historic role at the center of the Wellfleet community, helping individuals and families find their own spiritual practice. The church has additionally served Wellfleet in untold ways and offers a peaceful presence overlooking the town and harbor. We invite neighbors and visitors alike and strive to serve as a warm and welcoming place of fellowship, service, and Christian charity on the Outer Cape.

Our History

Over 300 years in the community

In 1721, the people of Billingsgate proclaimed ecclesiastical independence from Eastham and used the 20’x20’ meeting house at Chequesset Neck for both Town and Church meetings.

In 1740 a new site was chosen at the head of Duck Creek, and the present building was erected on that site in 1850. In 1879 when the original graceful, tapering steeple was blown down in a Nor’easter, landing point down in the yard across the street, a new, more substantial steeple replaced it.

In 1953 the ships’ bells striking system was installed in the clock; it’s the only church clock in the world that strikes ships’ bells.

Reverend Jonathan Elsensohn

Pastor Jon began leading us in worship Sunday, February 19, 2023. Previously he was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Freehold for six and a half years. Before moving to New Jersey, Jon was the Associate Pastor and Director of Christian Education for Pilgrim Congregational Church in Leominster, MA. Prior to entering parish ministry, he trained as a hospital chaplain, serving hospitals in Providence, RI and Memphis, TN. Pastor Jon is a graduate of the Episcopal Divinity School, and earned his BA (in Religion and Political Theory) from Marlboro College.

During his time in Freehold, Pastor Jon became involved in the Greater Freehold Clergy Association, where he met the love of his life, Jennifer, who prior to their move was the Pastoral Associate of the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine (Roman Catholic). Together, they both served as officers in the Clergy Association and became deeply involved in community life in the greater Freehold area. Since marrying Jennifer, Jon has become: a husband, step-father, cat and dog owner, a published author, and a life-time fetcher of things from the top shelf.
